Implants Q & A

What is a dental implant?

An implant is a metal post or frame that Dr. Christian surgically inserts into your jawbone to support prosthetic teeth. With implants, natural-looking replacement teeth have excellent stability and don’t slip or slide inside your mouth.

Implants are made of titanium because this metal allows for osseointegration, the process where bone fully integrates the metal. Osseointegration is what ensures your replacement teeth have support. Implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth or an entire mouthful of missing teeth.

How do dental implants work?

Dental implants generally require at least 2-3 in-office visits. At your first visit, Dr. Christian surgically inserts the implant into your jawbone. If you’re missing just one or a few teeth, a lone implant may be fine. If you’re missing all your teeth, Dr. Christian offers All-On-4® implants, a set of four strategically placed implants that can support an entire set of replacement teeth.

After having your implants placed, osseointegration takes a few months. Once your new implants fully meld to your jawbone, you come back in for a follow-up appointment to have your replacement teeth securely attached to your implants.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

If you’re missing any teeth and would like to fill gaps in your smile for an improved appearance, you may be a good candidate for implants.

A key factor in whether or not you’re a good candidate for implants is your jawbone density. Since bone is what fuses to an implant and secures it, you need enough tissue for adequate osseointegration. During your dental implant consultation, Dr. Christian will take X-rays of your mouth and jaw to determine the health of your bone. If you lack the density necessary to hold an implant, you might be eligible for bone grafting procedures.

If this is the case, Dr. Christian can provide a referral for you. If you’re not an ideal candidate for implants, she offers other tooth replacement options that you can explore.

How long do dental implants last?

As long as you take excellent care of your implants, there’s no reason they shouldn’t last a lifetime. It’s very important that you brush and floss your implant-supported replacement teeth just like you would your natural teeth.

Also, make sure to maintain regular visits at Dallas Dental Concierge so that Dr. Christian can monitor your implants. As you age, your mouth naturally changes and your implants may need minor adjustments over time.
